Samsung to release Galaxy Gear smartwatch on September 4th

Samsung Exec Confirms Samsung to unveil Galaxy Gear smartwatch on September 4th in Berlin, just a couple of days before this year’s IFA confab. Samsung’s mobile business chief Lee Young-hee said the product, called the Galaxy Gear, would be “a new wearable concept device” that would “enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways.”

Lee Young-hee also characterized the Galaxy Gear smartwatch as a “wearable concept device,” saying that Samsung has been working on the smartwatch category for a long time now, and noting that is aimed primarily at “young trendsetters” in the interview with the Korea Times. All of which combines to make it sound like Samsung is designing this not only as something that’s aimed at early adopters, but also as something of a fashion accessory.

The smartwatch appears to be the first dip into the wearable computing business for Samsung. Sony will be releasing its second generation SmartWatch next month, and the popular Kickstarter project Pebble recently made its way into Best Buy stores. Rumors suggest that Microsoft and Apple are working on smartwatches as well.
