Chinese smartphone and gadget maker Xiaomi today unveiled its product, Xiaomi YiCamera, a GoPro like sports camera but 8 times cheaper than GoPro. You can buy Xiaomi YiCamera Right away from the Mi.com website via flash sale at a fraction of the cost of its American inspiration: RMB 399 (US$63.50) in China.
Xiaomi didn’t actually create the YiCamera. It’s made by the same company as the Ants smart webcam, or “Xiaoyi,” which is also sold through Xiaomi’s online store. Xiaomi has struck partnerships with several gadget makers to offer a wider array of devices under its popular brand name, cementing its role as both a device maker and an ecommerce company. – via TechinAsia
This Xiaomi YiCamera records video at 1080p (60 frames per second) and includes a 16-megapixel camera that uses Sony’s highly-rated Exmor R BSI CMOS image sensor. That’s superior on paper to the Hero, which records at 1080p30 or 720p60 and includes a five-megapixel camera.
Xiaomi also beats the Hero on memory (its 64 GB allocation is twice as large), and weight (it is 72g compared to 111g), while it has a slightly larger battery. Like the Hero, the Xiaomi YiCamera can go as far as 40 meters underwater, which is probably the most important stat for those of us who like to take a camera near water.
The device is limited to China and it’s expected to stay that way, according to the same report, and because it’s targeting the Chinese market, it will naturally be pushing out a ‘travel edition’ of the Yi Action Camera, which includes a selfie stick.
(We know what you’re asking yourself right now, and yes, it can be effectively strapped onto a cat’s back.)
